For intel boards it's not a matter of a socket change, its motherboard standards that are changing. PCI-E 2.0 is the newest thing for motherboards, it speeds up the interface between the video cards, and increases the voltages supplied through the pci-e slot to accommodate the newer video cards that are coming out.
AMD has the new AM2+ boards that are just coming out now. They have the new Hyper transport 3.0 and support the new pci-e 2.0 standards. Rumors of am3 boards are talking about the end of next year.
