I just learned about defraging my comp, ive done it only once, well norton 360 did it for me. The prob, i stopped the optimization in the process... is that bad?

Also when is the best time to do defrag? why is it important? How do you know when to do it?

Basically you should be fine defragging once a month.

Oh and with the stopping it thing I am fairly sure you cant cause any damage doing that.

And because I am lazy heres a quote explaining defragging because I am to lazy to do it my self.

Fragmentation is caused by creating and deleting files and folders, installing new software, and downloading files from the Internet. Computers do not necessarily save an entire file or folder in a single space on a disk; they're saved in the first available space. After a large portion of a disk has been used, most of the subsequent files and folders are saved in pieces across the volume.

When you delete files or folders, the empty spaces left behind are filled in randomly as you store new ones. This is how fragmentation occurs. The more fragmented the volume is, the slower the computer's file input and output performance will be

Tuffie.

hey thanks man, and your not lazy, you copied and pasted it for me! lol

I do it almost every time I install a new program, especially if it's extremely large. It puts all those program files together and allows my programs to run better.

you guys say you defrag here and there, i was told that to much defraging can really screw up the computer or whatever, maybe the files, idk but its not good, thats what ive been told.

Some people say it decreases the life of the HDD.

I don't give a crap. I want my computer performing at peak efficiency!
