This has probably been asked before, so forgive me. But i want to know, if i bought a AM3+ board now, and a vishera cpu, can i look forward to more cpus? Or will there be a new socket by next year? And can somebody explain what AMD CPU names are? Not the 4100, 6300, etc. I mean like visgvisjera, piledriver, steamroller, bulldozer, etc. Like is bulldozer first, then vishera?

Vishera is the codename for the piledriver core architecture. For the architecture, it goes bulldozer, piledriver, steamroller, excavator (last 2 not out yet, last might not be apu only)

I would wait for more rumors to be around, i think steamroller might not be out untill next year, but tom's hardware already released an unofficial haswell engineering sample preview which is promising.

Bulldozer is the name of the first architecture. Zambezi is the name of the desktop processor of the Bulldozer architecture .

Piledriver is the name of the second architecture. Vishera is the name of the desktop processor of the Piledriver architecture.

Steamroller is the name of the third architecture. Nobody knows what the desktop name will be yet.

As of right now Steamroller desktop will be AM3+ too, but could change. But will have a new chipset as in the 1070/1090. If steamroller will work on AM3+ boards with the 970/990 chipsets is not known. From what I understand the Northbridge will be the same, just a name change with PCIe 3.0 enabled. But the southbridge will be updated.

I have heard that AMD will go with one socket on excavator for both the FX and APU.
