Where Is My Ram?

My computer has 512 MB RAM:In Photoshop CS when I try to open tiff files a message tells me that I have insufficient RAM; :( until now this HAS NOT been a problem and tiff files will still open OK in PSP.

Nothing has occurred to overload the PC's RAM.

On checking 'System Information' the following is shown:-

Processor: X86 Family 6 Model:8 Stepping 1:Authentic AMD 2097Mhz

Total Physical Memory 512.0 MB
Available Physical Memory 350.62 MB

Total Virtual Memory 2.0 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

I'll be very grateful if anyone can suggest an explanation - AND - hopefully - a solution!!

I can't see anything strange. It says that you are having 512 MB of Physical RAM, which is true according to what you said at the beginning of your post. Windows, and all other running processes and programs take a space from your RAM to operate, so you have only 350 MB of Physical free RAM.

So what's wrong with this?

how big are the tiffs, have you changed photo shop. Have you installed something. Have you ran virus and adware scanner, have you tries opening smaller tiffs, have you tried opening tiff in other apps, have you tried opening non tiffs with photoshop, have you tried reinstalling photoshop. All these things are worth a shot and without much more detail there is no much we can do. Try what i have suggested (you can find good adware threads in http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=12344).

Many thanks for your response and interest.

A typical tiff file that I have on a CD of professionally 2700 dpi 16 bit scanned transparencies is 22MB(!!).

smaller tiffs - same problem

[ii] non tiffs - no problem

[iii]reinstalling Photoshop - same problem

[iv] Now - this is strange - if I move a tiff file to my hard
drive Photoshop WILL open it!!

Does [iv] give a clue as to what is going on?

Could just be a messup with PSP and TIFF .. try making another virtual memory drive and pointing PSP to use that

Maybe ther is a problem with your cd drive, since you said that it works fine if you open it from a hard drive. Did you try it in another computer and see if it works?
