WHere is the trash can on XP

It's called recycle bin.
And should be on your desktop or you can right click start then left click explore and look near the bottom of the list.

Well, it's supposed to be on the desktop, and it actually can't be easily removed from the desktop, so if it's missing that's a bit of a problem. You should be able to delete files by selecting them and pressing the "Del" key rather than drag and dropping to the recycle bin. If the recycle bin really is missing from the desktop then I believe the fix would have to be in changing the registry which can potentially cause more problems if it's done improperly.
 
If it is missing from the desktop, and there are no other icons on the desktop, right click the desktop and in one of the menus there is a Show Icons option.
