Where to assemble a computer?

I'm just about to order the parts for my computer, but first I need to know what kind of floor assembly should be done on. My apartment has nothing but carpeted floors, is it okay to assemble it there, or should I assemble it at my parent's house, with hardwood floors?

Also, are there any other steps to take to prevent frying components?

id avoid a carpeted floor if i were you. you want to avoid any surfaces that might generate static buildup. a kitchen counter in your apartment would be fine, or a dinner table, just make sure everything is dry before you put any parts near it.

steps to take to protect your hardware are basically to ground yourself on the bare metal of your case to discharge yourself, and avoid liquids.

The dinner table would be good even though it sits on a carpeted floor?

Also, I've read about stuff like anti-static bracelets and such, would one of these be a good idea, and how do they work?

depends if your table is made of wood or something else. wood doesn't conduct electricity. you could put the wooden dinner table on top of a tesla coil and be fine. as far as bracelets go, ive never used one. just be cautious and ground yourself frequently just to be safe.

Ok, my table is made of wood. I suppose I can assemble it here then, long as I make sure to touch the case often. Thanks for the help, DirtyD

Go build your computer in bathroom (or kitchen like dirty dude said). No, seriously, you don't want to even touch the carpet when you're building, and if you really can't get away from the carpet an anti-static wristband is almost a must.

My bathroom is big enough that I could lay the stuff out on the floor . . that's not a bad idea. I know I'd be super pissed if I fried something.
