Where to start?

Hi all,
My mother in law has asked me to fix her computer. I'm no genious, but I think with time and your kind help, I can fix it. She leaves for Florida mid-Feb so I have it until she comes back and I have to make it as idiot proof as possible too...such as virus protection, pop ups, etc...
I will get the PC on the 4th of Feb, but thought I could get some info first.

Apparently she had someone from the "help line" help her fix it when it crashed and now she has two copies of XP on it.

So, will I need to reformat the HD or can I just delete one OS? will it let me?First I'm going to try and find all her photos she deperately needs. Could some photos be "hidden" from one OS and not the other?I have a portable external HD to use for keeping the files she needs.

Also, she uses AOL, so is the pop up and virus protection supplied? I'm just guessing based on the commercials.

This is a couple of weeks ahead of time, I know, but trying to get things started.
Any other advice would help.
Thanks
russ

What i would do is find as many photos and files of hers as possible, then once those are backed up, i would reformat and install one OS on there. Configure it, install apps, ect.

Thanks Geoff,
I would like to just try deleting one OS, can someone walk me down that road?

well, if she has a virus or something bad on it, or her registry is mesed up, then reinstalling an entire new one would fix all of those problems at once. and its easy to do.

ok.. when I get this thing, I'll remove all the files she wants and then log in here again and somebody can walk me through this.
