So, today I uninstalled a game that I'd installed a couple of days ago. Unreal Tournament 2004. It'd taken up about 6.5 gig but after uninstallation I got about 3 gig back. can anyone explain how this could happen?

well, maybe its stored in system restore, cuz i had the same problem, every day my HDD was getting smaller and smaller then when i turned it off everything was ok
When you uninstall games it doesnt always take all the files for that game off, you might need to look in your program files and delete remaining files. Also it could've left some fragmented files so try a system defrag.
It could also be saved games or extra mods/maps that were downloaded. Like Chiefs said go into your program files find the ut file and delete it all..then empty your bin.
Some of the game might be in there.
