I need to install some Antivirus and Firewall software on my new Laptop (I have already been attacked my the Sasser). What can you recommend (Free Software :D )?

Thanks

Well as free goes you cant go wrong with

AVG free edition (www.grisoft.com)

ZoneAlarm Firewall (www.zonelabs.com)

also download patches for your OS from Microsoft. Use software called BigFix it will tell you what patches that are Urgent

and also Disable DCOM. go to (www.grc.com) & download the "Dcomublator" that will disable DCOM for you

Can I ask (not wishing to offend anybody) but what is peoples obsesion with free protection products. If you want the best quality you have to pay for and as my old man quoted "If a deal sounds too good to be true it is". The only example of software that is free and the best is the free anti spyware programme that microsoft gives away.:D But if you really want free virus protection check here http://www.clamwin.net/
P.S. Dont trust me on tat site I have not checked it out fully, and can not be sure of its quality or safety.

Easy, not everyone is (a) as paranoid as everyone else and (b) all they are looking for is basic protection -- thats why we have seatbelts and airbags -- not pressurized cabins, titanium bathtubs and harnesses :P

seatbelts... -- not pressurized cabins
We have seatbelts cos they are law and preasurisedcabins would that not be dangerouse if we were in a car then the pressure suddenly changed, if it were high enough you would expode if there was a hole or you got out. lol :D Just thought I would say that. Oh and you would get "the bends" if you did not depressurize. hehe

Edit P.S. Praetor what do you think of my avatar, thats the first gif I ever made, you love it dont you, you just cant help but love it lol.

No we have seatbelts because they help protect us in a crash... it just so happens that governments think this is important enough to make it a law.

Thats going from high pressure to low, in which case a pressurized cabin wouldn't be used (well sort of, but I don't think thats what Praetor was talking about)

I wont be responding to the first part of your post because I will let you figure out your mistakes..

as for your avatar... While the question was for Praetor.. I will voice my opinion.. 2 things... first, lets stay on topic and second, its a very nice avatar... but not for a forum avatar... tone it down! lol ..that might be the most nauseating avatar I have ever seen...

And in the world of computing security, basic firewall is "law" and "fancy expensive ones" are for people wanting a bit more. Why dont we have aftermarket titanium bathtubs for cars? Wait they do exist. But why arent they common? Quite possibly because people dont always need/want that kinda protection -- same thing with computers -- people dont need whitelisting so basic free firewalls are good enough for the average Joe.

Why would a fancy pressurized cabin "suddenly change pressure" (do think of the correlation back to computing when responding :)

Yeah when I get annoyed with it I may change it :P
