im about to get a dell pc running with vista would it be a good idea to swap my browser from the internet explorer default to another option people mention google chrome and firefox and would there be any draw backs from leaving internet explorer seeing im using a microsoft operating system

firefox also. somebody posted some nice pluggins. i picked up maybe 5 i wanted. i cannot find the link with my query.

on the otherhand you use what ever ya want. you need windows explorer for system updates for sure.

I use them all to a point. IE - FF - Opera and Chrome for right now. IE and FF the most, then Opera and Chrome the least.

I do feel like when I'm using IE and Chrome I am feeding the Beast.

google chrome for me, it is faster than all the other browsers. i was used firefox for years until chrome came out then it took its place.

I would actually also consider Opera. It's not nearly as customizable as Firefox, but it is much faster and takes less resources. I have it on my netbook and I'm actually considering switching my desktop to Opera too. It's worth a shot.

Thats my main issue with switching, i like chrome but its all rounded and bright blue, atm my theme is all 90 or 45 degree angles and dark black, as soon as chrome or opera become that customizeable id switch instantly.

Chrome is light and fast, but lacks features, and doesn't read all webpages as it should. Firefox is a bit bulky and somewhat unstable, but has tons and tons of addons that you can download to customize it.

Well Opera does have some customization options. I didn't look too much into it, because I just wanted to install my programs on it and shut it down, but I saw something about widgets on one of the file menus. I don't know how easy it is to customize Opera, or how much they let you customize it, but it's available.

I also support the opera vote. Any of the three alternatives suggested are fine too (I'm not personally a huge fan of Chrome due to the whole big brother thing, but that doesn't mean it isn't a nice browser) I find it to be faster than FF and about on par with Chrome, sometimes faster. It's nowhere near as customizable as FF, but more so than Chrome. It is probably the most secure browser that's relatively mainstream though, due to its small market share and whether directly correlating or not, great security. I have all three really, use them all, decide for yourself which you like best.

Google Chrome is very very simple and easy to use, in my opinion it's one of the best browsers if you just want to surf. Internet explorer is better if you want to keep tabs on your browsing or don't know your way around the net.
