Im surfing the net to find out what CPU suits best for gaming?
Any ideas or anything? If you have just reply to this forum.
Thank you in advance for the coming replys.

Personally, I do suggest either Q9550 or i7 920

But if don't care about how much you pay, the i7 965 would be the best for you

well it would have helped if you gave a budget on which cpu was the best, juast asking what cpu is the best for gaming then obviusly people are going to say the latest and greatest out there but most people cannot afford them.

If you go i7...dont get the 920..

Your already spending top dollar--get the 940---much better!

Why do you say that scooter? Speak carefully btw because I have watched your posts and know you are knowledgeable and value your opinion ;) Is the performance/Oc'ing that much better over the 920?

I am asking this due to I have decided to build a I7 system and thought the 920 was best cost/performance

How much more Oc can you get with similar Mb and ram with the 940?

I think that you can currently get a 920 for $300 on newegg and 940 goes for $570 and the 965 for around $1050 (I wonder if this best for a long term build due to unlocked Multi though and 6.4 qpi, current computer I am using is a 6 yo' P4 )I tend to keep them awhile, hehe. It is almost painful to use and play games with though. The way technology is moving I would hate to get something that in 2 or 3 years would struggle with tasks/games even with regular video card upgrades

Hey man..

Well, there is nothing wrong with the i7 920, and yeah..for the price--it makes the most sense.

Money aside...obviously the 965 extreme chip..

Now, the 940 is expensive...no question...but in a few quick tests I have my 940 running at 3.82Ghz cool and stable and I changed only 1 setting!

Gpu stock, ram stock, less than 1ghz overclock of i7 cpu from stock and I did 18,877 on 3dMark Vantage.

The 920 was a struggle to get stable at 4Ghz without changin' a few things--but it does OC very well ..almost a 1Ghz step up from stock without any volt changes or anything else.

--Take all this with a grain of salt--we literally have been playing around for 3 days and I only got my build up and running late yesterday morn.

If gaming is your priority, then I would worry more about the GPU, not the CPU. Obviously, the faster your CPU, the better it’s going to be. The i7 is not necessarily a must if you’re building a well balanced gaming system. It’s all going to depend on your overall setup. What type of monitor are you going to be driving? What type of GPUs?

Forgot to mention... most games don't scale beyond dual core cpu's. A high frequency Core 2 might also do you justice.

That 3.82 sounds pretty good with only one setting change it might be worth the extra money it is a definite difference over the 920.I guess it depends on how long someone wanted to stretch a build before it becomes obsolete. My p4 3.06 was decent in 2002 but now in late 2008 it doesnt cut it anymore

Keep us posted on new results scooter, especially on the 965 if you get results from it :D

I highly doubt I will test the 965 extreme...they are just too expensive to demo and nobody will be buying them.

Octocore i7's are rumored for mid-to-late Jan 09' but who knows.

Yeah they are expensive, with tech coming out so fast it is hard to decide, dont even know when games will switch over fully to multicore processor dependent where dual cores will have diminished returns for gaming
