Which CPU

I'm trying to spec out a system for VMware and can't decide which processor(s) would be best. I'm torn between the new AMD X2 4800+ or duel AMD Opertron 252's. I like the X2 and I can probably over clock it to 2.8Ghz and get better performance then the Opertron 252's and I haven't seen much information on OC'ing the Opertron in a duel configuration. I've already ruled out the Xeon because it looks like the Opertron stomps all over it but the new Pentium D 840 Extreme looks interesting too because HT would help with VMware and could probably be over cloced to 3.6Ghz with air cooling.

Thats because people who buy Opteron setups generally want servers and people who want servers want stability and mass quanitities of RAM. OCing essentially is for "kids and their video games". As for which suits you ... depends on what you're doing ... (why not settle for dual-dualcore Opterons)

Becase if the X2 4800+ OC'd to 2.6Ghz will perform the same as duel 252's it will do it for almost half the cost. And I won't need more the 4GB of RAM and might use the system for gaming and video encoding sometimes as well.

1. Seems you've answered your own question
2. If you're considering opterons for encoding ... it'd suggest either (a) you're doing very hardcore stuff (at which point my comment about opteron applies) or (b) you're very misinformed on hardware requirements. For the record, what type of encoding will you be doing? (yes through the jargon at me ... i do this encoding stuff a lot) :)

I will be doing some MPEG2 encoding and video editing in Adobe Premier mostly converting family movies and stuff off of our camcorder using a firewire connection. I know that we don't need a super computer to do this but with VMware ESX server the more hardware you can throw at it the better.
