i have a question...
what is the difference between the AMD Athlon and the Pentium 4, which is faster?

because i dont know if i should get a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ laptop or a Pentium 4 3.2GHz laptop....

are they the same? is 3200+ the same as 3.2GHz?? i need ur help!!

depens on what ur going to be doing, both cpu's are pretty much the same speed, the amd might be a tad faster but barely enough to notice, if u will be dong alot of gaming then get the amd, if multitasking then get the intel

no, amd uses that "rating" just to compare how fast it is compared with an intel, the actual ghz of a 3200 is around 2.0(im guessing but its sumwhere around there)

most of all tho, what is ur purpose? mulitaskting of gaming

If you're looking for multitasking, then go with an Intel. If you're looking for gaming then go with an AMD. And yeah, the 3200+ model number is just so that people get an idea of where the processor stands in comparison to an Intel chip, even though most of the AMD chips run at a much slower speed...

They don't run at much slower speeds. They operate at much slower speeds, but, obviously, speed is only a part of the equation of performance.

Not this bloomin topic again, how many times do peoplehave to ask this question, there is no CPU that is "BETTER". They both excel in different areas.

RI understand what your saying but you shouldnt cover everything like that.

A FX57 is just better in the "everything area" than a 1.6Ghz pentium 3.

Well, unless you intend to compare 2 overly uncomparable things (like an FX57 and a P3) what he said is right (and yes I know you were just making a point, but so am I :P). Most people are comparing the same generation/era CPUs, I don't know many people who want to compare a P3 to any athlon 64.

True, so true. But (not to get too pedantic) there is always a best cpu for each task, the question is what that task is, and of course your budget comes into play :D

how many times has this been asked now? :)
i really dont think that there's a vast amount of difference between them now. give or take a little here and there its about 50-50.
it comes down to bang for buck with me, its best to look around and see what works out the cheapest option for you. also, people would instantly say go for AMD cos they're cheap, however, intel chips are not as expensive as they once were; it all depends on the spec of the system you wanna build

Well as everyone allready said it depends on the task, but on a laptop i would take a AMD couse they are cooler and a laptop isn't very well cooled;)

I've always used AMD because of the price difference. Might try pentium now that the prices are gettin lower.

Pentium Ms don't run very hot at all, they have a TDP of 27W (Pentium M 7x0) max. The Pentium M 7x3 models are 5W and the 7x5 are 21W. The mobile Athlon 64s can hit a TDP of 81.5W (mAthlon 64-3000+ to 3400+) The mobile Turions come in 35W and 25W flavours.

It used to be the case that amd were cheaper. But that hasn't been the case for a while now
