which is faster/better performance

Hi..

I have an OLDER computer...

intel pentium 4 CPU 2.26
2.26 GHZ 1.5g ram

I can get, for no charge from work...

DEL Optiplex620
core 2 CPU
6600 @2.40GHZ
3.49 GHZ, .99 Gram

Is it worth my while to put my home hardrive into this system and add a little more RAM, or is it not that much of a step up that I would notice the difference?

I know each system is outdated but I have no plan to buy a new system in the near future and was wondering if the second would give better performance.

thanks for any input.

you wont be able to transfer the windows from system to system without breaking the EULA.
The E6600 will perform much better than the P4. to put it in range, the Q6600 will perform at about the same level as a Pentium 4 at 9.21 GHz. Just add some more ram, 4GB is about the max you will need just doing everyday task. I would also suggest upgrading the GPU in it to take full advantage of the new CPU power you will have.

But I could leave the windows system that is already installed on the DEL and add stuff from there...correct? And don't swap the system hardrives?

recently did a format and clean install on my home system so most files are on a seperate hardrive anyway..just need to install whatever software is on the system HD....does that sound right?

thanks for the input

Yes, that sounds right. You will need to reinstall your programs and then transfer your files to it. once all the files are transfered, you will be able to erase your old hard drive and put it in the new system for extra storage.

That second PC is way better. As said, just leave that OS on there. Uninstall everything, and delete all the data, and install your own stuff. Make sure it isnt virus infested or something.

graphics

what about graphics... del site says it has.. (see below)
I have an nvidis 5200ultra card in my present system. I like the TV out and the Digital hook up to my LCD. Should I put in NVIDIA card or purchase a new one you may suggest.

I will up the RAM to 3GB

I Appreciate the input.

you will need a new card for the C2D system. As far as my research shows the FX5200 Ultra is AGP8x and the C2D will have PCI express x16 or 2.0 x16.

what do you plan to do with the computer exactly? This info will help us to pick a card that will suit your use perfectly. We will also need to know what connectors that your LCD has, as in Svideo or HDMI, or VGA/DVI.

no gaming or anything like that...mostly burning and playing movies, streaming video..etc...
monitor presently is hooked up DVI but can be VGA also...may as well stay DVI (I am assuming that is better.) I have a s-video/& audio pin cable to RCA's that I would like to use to get image and sound to a TV within reach of the 50' cord... that's about it..

in which case i would suggest something in the HD4000 range. you can pick one up at newegg for like 29 USD.
I dont suggest getting from a used source like Ebay or Craigslist unless they will let you test it before you buy to ensure that it works.
