I have two laptops: inspirion 1150 with pentium 4m 2.66Ghz and inspiron 700m with pentium 1.6 Ghz. Just wondering which is faster if they have the same RAM? How do I compare pentium 4m with pentium m?
Probably the Pentium M 1.6, I don't think the Mobile Pentium 4 can touch it. When the Pentium M isn't weighted down by laptop chipsets it can perform up there with the Athlon FX55 (and other high speed Athlon 64s) and it does way better than the Pentium 4 desktop variants
Pentium M
- Mobile chip from ground up
- 400MHZ BUS, 3rd generation Speedstep
- 64K L1, 1MB L2
- Dont remember how many stage pipeline but its closer to 10, the number 13 sticks out for some reason....
- MMX, SSE, SSE2
- L1 Latency 3 cycles, L2 Latency 5 cycles
Ok in summary it's a much more efficient processor
Ok, so the Pentium M (which I'm not sure what socket it is) would be a generally better choice if you had the option ot put it in a desktop? Or would a P4 still be best suited in a Pentium desktop?
- PentiumM is Socket479
- On the desktop (strictly with Intel), id argue a S775 Prescott is better (of course that requires some extensive overclocking i.e., well past 5.5GHz) .. out of the box or with reasonable OCs id give it to the PentiumM
