Which Linux do you use?

Sorry, it is impossible to list them all, so choose the best fitting distro.

why are there so many linux versions out there? eachone of them does a specific thing?

To install something in Ubuntu, you go to "Add/Remove Programs" in the menu. Then check "VLC".

You can install packages (collection of software) through Synaptic in System->Administration.

You can also do it through the command line, which is easier, if you are used to it.

Linux "version" are distributions. Each distribution is often the result of an individual or company wanting a specific OS, each Distro is usually made for a range of individuals.

I recommend you look for one that suits you.

package managers can be a huge pain in the ass when it comes to linux. Typically you can download the .deb file and install it, or use APT your terminal based package manager

Ubuntu's is easy, you have graphical menus and you put a check by the ones you want.

you can also use the command line, if you want.

Getting software for Linux is much easier than getting software for Windows. For Linux, you have repositories, and simple package managers, for Windows, you either: Pay for it, or search for it, and hope it is what it says it is.

I voted for Ubuntu, though I really use Kubuntu.

I like the apt-get method of installing software (beats windows), and I prefer KDE over Gnome. My 2nd choice would have been a hard-drive install of Knoppix, which is very similar.

Maybe I should have just listed *buntu.

I like apt-get too, although I usually use aptitude. I never though of Knoppix for the poll, even though I use it all the time!

I'm using ubuntu right now at this very second in time, so i chose that.

I'm getting a mac soon, but i was thinking of going over to PCLinux.

Mainly for the speed. I'll be putting it somewhere without a internet connection so security and updates (+No. of packages) don't matter. Plus it will probably be easier for the windows users. Although Ubuntu may just stay. I'll have to find some benchmarks. (and do some testing of my own) Qemu! here i come

If i was to switch to Linux for good thn it would be Suse

I just downloaded it yesterday. I will try it later when I get home. If I were to switch to Linux for good, which I have, I would use a Debian based distro or Slackware.
