Which Linux?

I am going to have a dual-boot system with Linux and WinXP. I was planning to use Fedora, but is there a better Linux? In terms of better I mean more compatible with Windows programs and usability.

There's no such thing as "a better linux"
there may be better distro's for particular tasks or machines, but you really need to go test them out to find which one best suits your style and your system

I personally am a big fan of slackware, however many people hate it, lots of people like suse...I think suse is teh suck
I've never used fedora before, red hat is a developers distro

have you looked into BSD or Solaris at all?

there's too many out there to list, just look for something that covers your particular needs

I'm looking for something that is totally windows programs compatible....I really know nothing about Linux....are they all compatible with Windows programs?;)

Oh, BTW, I am looking for one that is totally free

no they are not compatable with windows, but you can run some virtual PC apps that enable windows programs to run such as wine or the newest one good for gaming is called cedega (formerly WineX) but I believe it requires a subscription (don't quote me on that though)

Sorry for not being clear, I meant being compatible with all programs that run on Windows, not the actual Windows OS:o

Nope. Windows programs can't run in linux unless you emulate em. Linux has it's own programs. Some programs are cross-platform (wil run on both like firefox).

I use gentoo wich isn't a beginners distro but it has GREAT documentation and i had gentoo as my first linux. It forces you to learn alot about linux on the go. The install does take a long time but it has the advantage that it's completly optimized and customized ( www.gentoo.org ).

Hmmmm....it looks like I will be rethinking this....i had heard that Linux ran Windows programs:confused:

Is there another non-Windows OS that does support windows programs? All I want to do is get away from that nasty bill gates software.

if you decide to use linux then u are stepping away from that M$ crap. when u heard that linux ran win progs they were prolly talking about emulation. when u emulate stuff tho it starts running slowly, since its all virtual. but with the specs of ure machine u should be fine, cept u might want more ram ;)

Well are there any other operating systems that run windows programs? I don't know that I want to emulate all the programs that I have, my computer really isn't blazing fast or anything
