Well my gf was asking me for the longest time If i can buy her an Apple. Since I never had any experience with Apples, only what I saw in the store, I don't know what to get her. I heard that they'r very good when it comes to reliability and not freezing and all that stuff but I'm totally clueless. She wants just a basic machine, for internet, music,movies and microsoft word. But I don't want slow ass machine, but something good. Can I get something good for $1300 ?

I was looking at the 17'' too. But it's all giberish when it comes to apples for me. I'm either gonna get her new AMD desktop or this apple. The apples I heard are complicated to operate, what do u think ?>

Apples are, and always have been, computers for dummies. With OS/X, they are UNIX for dummies. So, you're right. Stability and performance blow away a PC. Viruses and hacks are virtually a non-issue. I would recommend a different choice in office suite, though. OpenOffice, probably, if you want to handle the same documents. Microsoft is fickle about its relationship to Apple and its platform. Best to just not deal with them. As far as ease of use, there is a learning curve. If she is switching from a PC to Mac OS, it is different. Not hard. Different. "Think different"

Dock = Taskbar
Little red dot = Close X
Safari = Internet Explorer
iTunes = Windows Media Player

P.S. Apple hardware reliability has been #1 since Apple's been Apple. However, Apple prices have been #1 for the same time span.

The mac is probably a great bet for a decent computer, whatever spec it is. You can use Apple's proprietory Appleworks on the computer which has many of the functions of Office. The Mac, with it's current version of the OS (10.4.5) won't t my knowledge run Openoffice as it's not running a true version of Linux, although it does use the Darwin Kernel.

In reply to comments about the OS being simple to use: Switching from a PC to a mac would be pretty smooth. The latest mac OS takes a little while to get used to but it's more..... intuitive. Basically, things are easy to find and navigation ever since OS 10.1 has been like browsing the web, with back and forward buttons. Preferences allow easy configuration of the mac and you can do all your hardware configs through this rather than having to carry out physical work on the hardware itself. Applications can be stored in the applications folder just inside the HD, you can config the mac for each person's account so they can each have music, docs etc, just like windows. So where's the selling point? I mean, when you look at it, they sound like they're no different to a PC.

1) design
2) Stability
3) Linux kernel
4) One install DVD for the OS. No drivers to be hunted down.
5) Even the cheapest mac is fully functional.

Saying all this, markets are converging at one heck of a rate. I hesitate to say this, but in 24 months, I would expect everyone to be given the option to run OS X on a box standard alloy cased PC.
