Im doing my 1st build and need some help picking a motherboard.
Ive finally decided i want a Q6600 processor and will need a HDMI output and built in sound as i want a media center.

I heard Asus are good so maybe the Asus P5Q-EM or P5E-VM?

I could do with some help picking memory to, i was thinking 4Gb rated at 1,066Mhz?

Will i want DDR2 or DDR3?

Well none of those motherboards support DDR3, DDR3 is fairly new and to support it with intel you will need a 1366 socket as appose to the 775.

Now this is up to you, you can go up market for a 1366 socket type motherboard, these are significantly more expensive and will set you back around 200-300 quid for a nice one. Then you have DDR3 ram which is also overpriced at something like 50 quid per GB. Also you will need a i7 processor to work with this btw. :)

So my advice, depending on your budget is to stick with the 775 socket thus DDR2. Those are good motherboards and either is good for your spoken needs for them.

If the case supports ATX sized boards then you will be better off with that. You can use a Micro ATX board and it will be cheaper but it will have significantly less I/O and less real estate for upgrading. If I remember right the EM is a micro. I'm pretty sure I have a system around here built on it. I use ASUS boards for everything and have since the late 1980's. They are very reliable. There are perfectly fine boards from other manufacturers. I've just been amazed at the level of quality control and consistency from the ASUS products over the years.

You want DDR2. The DDR3 modules are for the i7 processors. The speed of the memory is less important than you might think. I usually use 800 mhz but 1066 will provide a little more performance - at least theoretically.
