My girlfriend has £500 to spend on a PC.
It'll mainly be used for Photoshop, word processing, internet and music compilation CD burning.

Here's the 3 I've put on the shortlist.......

* Processor: AMD Sempron 3000+
* Processor speed: 1.8
cache 128kb
* RAM: 1024MB
* Storage: 160GB
* Records DVDs: 8x
* Graphics: ATI Chipset 64 mb shared
ms works
11 in 1 media card reader
bus - 1600 mhz

* Processor: Intel Pentium 4, processor 519
* Processor speed: 3.06 GHz
cache 1 mb
bus 533mhz
* RAM: 512 Mb
* Storage: 200 GB
* Records DVDs: 8x
* Graphics: Intel 900, 224mb shared
ms works
8 in 1 media card reader

# Intel Celeron D Processor 346
# 3.06GHz, 533MHz FSB, 256Kb Cache
# 256Mb nVidia 6200SE Graphics
# 512Mb DDR RAM
# Dual Layer DVD ReWriter drive
# 160Gb Hard Drive
# Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
# AOC 17MC 17" TFT MONITOR
# Onboard stereo, speakers Sound Card
# Onboard stereo speakers Sound Card
# 3.06GHz Clock-Speed

I'm not quite sure about the processor MHz ratings and bus MHz etc....
Will they make much difference?
I see one has double the RAM of the rest but a lesser MHz....

Any advice most appreciated! :D

For her tasks you should go with the cheapest alternative. The only thing these machines won't do well is run games. If they are equally priced I'd go with the Celeron as it got the 17" TFT monitor, it also has the best video subsystem of the 3 (it's not a great gamingcard though). Also, 512MB RAM is sufficient for her tasks.

They're all £500, and all come with a 17" TFT.

It won't be used for gaming, but now and again will have to deal with some large images in Photoshop CS.

Looks like a choice between processors really I think.....
Is it just personal preference really, and all the Intell hype is just that... hype?!

just thought maybe the processor speed was a bit low in comparrsion to the others being only 1.8 ghz when th eothers are about 3 ghz?

The eMachines 3Ghz is by far the best, if theres not a huge difference in price i'd go with that one.

The 2nd has the best processor for Photoshopping, yet the 3rd has the best video performance. Both are essential for that kind of work.

Since there all the same price, deffinetly go with the 2nd one. Could someone please tell me how much that costs in USD?

ok the LCD is most of the value in those systems.
1. 1gb of ram is very good, dont worry about sempron 1.8ghz. its still good.
2. pentium 4 is better... and 512mb of ram is decent.
3. celeron sucks, 256mb of ram will hold you back if gaming, so the better video card isnt worth it.
id say go with comp 1 or 2.

1st of all, celeron D, not celeron, big difference. Second of all, 256megs of dedicated video memory owns all of them. And it has a 6200SE which owns all the integrated graphics.

Oh I see, well then it doesn't matter to much 'processorwise' as thats a Pentium 4B (533FSB), it has better L2 cache but thats about it. The P4 system gives you bigger HDD storage though.

1. Shes not going to game.

2. The Celeron has 512MB of RAM not 256.

3. CeleronD CPU's does not suck. Besides, theres no chance ever to tell a difference in her tasks.

By a far margin.

The Celeron D would be ok, but i still say that the 3Ghz P4 would be best, especially if she wants to do several tasks at once. And there all the same price.

Sempron 3000+ and 1GB DDR, plus 160GB HDD...that first one seems liek the best choice.
Yea. One gig of RAm will serve her best, although 512 will do. For this situation 1024 megs of RAM and the 3 ghx intel processor will do, but this is the best choice of the 3
