Go for the Home Premium edition and the 8600GT or 9600GT and avoid the Basic edition and you'll be a happy camper!
If you are worried about high settings on the 8600 model I seem to be able to take a low end card and still run various games with the details set high. But wait a bit for a price drop on the 9600GT(card you really want) and go with the HP edition. That's seems to be the best option.

I think you will find the price tags between the two cards sees a larger gap there. The prices run from about $65-$120 for an 8600GT while seeing $120-$240 for a 9600GT. That's up to a $120 difference compared to only $20 between the two editions.

For the same or less you could also go with an 8800GT which is comparing a high end model to a low to mid range one. The 8600GTs and 9600GTs are each the lower end models in each series while the 8800s and 9800s are at the high end.
The 9600GT is simply another low end model in the newer series while the thing to look at when selecting a card for gaming is thing like support for antiliasing, antisostropics, etc. for visual quality as well as overall performance. Get a better performing card along with a better edition of Windows at the same time would be the thought there.
