I bought a laptop off eBay for kicks today, it has a PCMCIA slot, and I have a wireless card which works on Windows 2000 and XP, the laptop spec is

Intel Pentium MMX 166MHz
64mb of RAM
6.1GB HDD

I have a card somewhere which works with Windows 98, but it was lost with moving, perhaps it would be wise to hunt and find? :D

I found my network adapter which works with Windows 98, now is just get the case of locating drivers, its a Wireless B adapter which is unbranded and unamed and bought for $3 off eBay in 2004.... I am pretty sure I have the drivers on the network drive.

Quite curious to see if it will run Windows XP though!

windows xp will work with it. Some more ram will definitely make it as fast as it can be. It will be usable but not fast

I agree. Windows 98 2nd edition was a good stable system in its day. Ive tried XP on a older laptop. took for ever to start and run. 98 was the best choice. had for a couple years and playing with it. then took a dump.

Ill do a Super PI, but I doubt 3dmark would even run on it.

Windows 98 seems like a good OS for it to be honest, I think its probably the one id go for.

Depending on what you are going to use it for, if it was me I would try a light linux distro like Puppy.. you can google it and dl a live bootable CD and play with it without making any real changes to the drive.

Even in the best of circumstances with 98SE it is still going to be slower than hell due to overhead for windows.

No doubt 98 would be the best option. It wouldn't be too bad. But if you're doing it for kicks then why not put XP on it?:D I've had Windows XP on a 200mhz mmx P1 with 384mb ram and it ran pretty well until i bloated the system up.

It arrived today, it does not boot off CD, it has to have a bootable floppy, I got Windows 98 installed, with IE 6 and wireless internet. Unfortunately, it actually only has 32MB of RAM, but I just ordered a RAM upgrade, which maxes it out, a whole 80MB!! Ill then upgrade it to Windows XP Home Edition and run it as an XP rig... a slow XP rig =P
