Which Operating System Should I Choose?

New Member
I own a Windows XP.
I Can't Decide If I Want:

a)Windows Vista
b)Mac
c)Linux

I am a website designer and I want the best Operating System out there.
As in, Best Security, Best Features and Use Of....
So please help me out.
 
I do a lot of graphic design and sound related work. I have both a Vista machine and A few Macs. My .02USD is that mac is the most solid platform around. I never see a blue screen of death on my macs and they are stupid easy to use.

IMHO if you need to keep productivity high then consider a mac, cause I think you will have less downtime.

That said, you should understand that not all programs run on mac OS so this means that either you will have to run windows on a partitioned startup disk (with boot camp) to run those windows programs, or you will have stay PC.

I like having both at my disposal and Mac is the only one that can do both without a bunch of crazy hacks. Plus if you have your mac running both windows and Mac OS you will have at least one operating system when your windows partition gets corrupted :)

It helped me out a bit but macs are expensive.
Also, I wanna know what people think about Linux. I looked around the internet
and alot of sources say that Linux is a good operating system. But I dont know.
I just dont wanna make a bad decision.

Hello, I have recently installed Ubuntu Linux in a dual boot configuration with Windows XP Home, and I am very happy with Ubuntu and use it almost exclusively now.

You can get a Ubuntu Live CD which will allow you to boot from CD and run Ubuntu to see if it works with all of your hardware. You can then use that same CD to install Ubuntu which is very easy.

i suppose it all depends on what your use too i find XP is my personal fave i hate macs and as of at the moment cant understand linuxs
 
Linux is great... and hey! it's free so you might as well try it, eh? I'd recommend Ubuntu.

You'll find that both Linux and Mac are great for security (MUCH better than Windows.) I personally prefer Mac, but then you might as well try Linux first as you don't have to spend anything on it. For your purposes you may find that shelling out the money for a Mac is worth it though, as Mac is better for graphics work than Linux.

just download a linux CD and try it out... you can run it right off the CD without touching your hard drive... and if you don't like it, all you've lost is a blank CD.
 
There are hundreds of linux distros but I do recomend linux ubuntu and also you don't have to download the cd you can order one for free and they'll send it to you for free, just takes a couple of weeks lol. I prefer downloading though, much quicker. and with ubuntu you can run it as a live cd (straight off the disk without installing) or you can just install it but note that linux doesn't have much support for games and windows apps unless you run wine (a linux program for running windows programs) but wine doesnt work all the time.
 
It depends on you. If you want to buy software choose windows.
Else choose linux: most of the software available is free.
For example on windows you have photoshop, on linux you have GIMP.
