Which parts need to be compatible

So I am building a gaming pc and I know that your processor has to be compatible with your motherboard for the pc to work. But is there any other components of the computer that have to be compatible like does it matter what ram, hard drive or video card I buy or any other part?
 
Ram has to match memory slots on motherboard. What video card you get determines what power supply you need.
 
Like said above. If your doing a gaming build. Pick which processor you want. Get a compatible socket motherboard. It will probably be DDR3 memory, pick a speed compatible with the motherboard and CPU. Hard drive/SSD will probably be SATA. The video card will be PCIe.
