I need to choose between two different processers the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and the AMD Athlon 64 AM2 3500+. they are both the same price, which is better in comparison
thx

First off, they are two totally different sockets(AM2 and Socket939) so you have to get the correct motherboard. Next, I beleive the AM2 socket allows for DDR2 RAM, but I have not really gotten myself up on this just yet... Also, at least with the previous 939 models, there are different versions of the processor. Some have SSE3, some don't. Some use a different process, etc etc. However, being the same price, they probably are the same.

Really, the question is do you want the newest and best motherboard/upgrade path?

One brief description found on a vendor's page with several other models states:
"AMD AM2 Athlon 64 3500 Orleans Core, 2.2GHz, 512KB Cache - Retail
Manufacturer: AMD
Product ID:
Ref: 5174
The 3 main changes on the AM2 are that it will now use DDR2 Memory. A new pin out configuration although still 940pin are different. A New Heat Sink Fan configuration is also required.

All retail versions will include a suitable Heat Sink Fan." http://www.cannings.co.uk/acatalog/AMD_-_Athlon_64__Socket_AM2__-__Single_Core.html
For a look over of a more extensive article on both AM2 and FX dual core cpus as well as the changeover of several models to the AM2 socket from the basic 939 go to http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2006/05/23/am2_athlon_64_fx-62_x2_5000/1.html

get the socket AM2 3500+... its a newer socket and will be much more upgradable.
in fact, wait for Core 2 duo (AKA conroe) to release that way you can choose between that or an AMD because AMD's will drop in price marginally when core 2 is released.

I'm waiting for the Opterons to start dropping in price. I prefer running a type and model cpu that has been out for awhile rather then jumping on the newest bird to fall out of the nest. Often AMD and Intel alike will have to develop patches when a new OS comes out like Vista. Upgrading take a little more then swapping cpus out. You will also need a board that supports a different type of cpu. http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K9N_SLI_Platinum&class=mb

Thx for telling me about the price drops. i looked around abit and i found prices for the X2 series will be dropping by 50% on July 24 with the release of Intel new CPU. Now ill be able to afford a AMD Athlon X2 AM2 4000+. =) i have to wait a bit, but to get a 100% better CPU will be worth it.

One article that confirms that can be read at http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2800 In fact the price for the cpu ordered for a replacement board is already seen at Athlon 64 3500+ (socket AM2 and 939) $189 $112 $109(latest)

Some gamers around here will love this change seen. Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (socket AM2 and 939) $365 $240(new)

So an Opteron 148 isn't good anymore? :P It's basically a FX-51. It's a very good performer. FX-51 used to be one of the best processors.

The Opteron 165 seems to be the OCer's favorite in that line of processors. The interest seen here on this line of model cpus is more for stability over long periods since it is or is closer to a server type. The Opteron 185 is one being looked at for the next planned build. Unfortunately to keep a 2.2ghz system running here an order for the lesser 3500+ S939 model will run on a new board. The bios on the current board is just about toast. Yet the old Socket A cpu may live on another board some time?

I'm simply waiting for the prices on Opterons to come down for the next buils while now replacing one 2.2ghz cpu(32bit) for a new one due to a board problem. Fortunately Asus is great at sending out replacement chipsets preflashed with the bios version you want on it. But it's time to retire this ole Socket A board and let it upgrade an even older XP1800+ system with 98 on it. Unfortunately the Asus A8N SLI model board doesn't support Opterons or AM2 model cpus. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131524R

im doing both, waiting for price drops cause by the new CPU's coming, and ill be getting X2 AM2 which will be about the same price as the one i was looking at before. just gotta wait of july 24 now. 20 more days...
