Which processor?

Hey, I'm new to this forum so please bear with me!

I currently own a desktop computer - the HP Pavillion p6300uk.

All the specs are here:

I am thinking of upgrading it's current AMD Athlon x2 processor to the Phenom x4 965 black edition. The link to the page I have put in this post tells me that it should be compatible, but I have a couple of doubts about it I was hoping to clear up;

1. I don't fully understand what TDP means, and apparently my computer/motherboard/processor is using a 95 watt something, but the Phenom states that it uses 125 watts or something? Or that is is only compatable with 125 watts? Could someone clear this up for me and tell me if it is actually compatible with my computer please? I think it is something to do with the cooling of the processor but I'm not sure exactly. Would I need an extra fan or something?

2. How loud is this processor likely to be in comparison to my current Athlon x2? It is pretty quiet to me and I like the way it doesnt make much noise, so I hope this new processor won't be a huge difference.

It would be great if someone could get back to me on this as I am a little stuck on this, I have already upgraded my RAM and Graphics card, but since I do a lot of photo editing, and HD video editing encoding (also a little gaming) I would like my computer to have the best components of it's ability!

P.s. if it's relevant, I'm 7unning Windows 7 64 bit, have 4gb RAM and an Sapphire 5570 1GB Graphics card.

Thanks!

If you noticed, it says you have a 95W limit. It can run any 95W processor. They make a Phenom II 945 thats 95W.

(TDP: 95 watt)

OK, so it does mean that it is the limit? Also, I can't find that 945 95 Watt processor, I can only find one which is still above the limit.

However I can find one that is 95w which is the Phenom 840 (According to Amazon.co.uk anyway). How would that compare to the 9** series?

It seems all the 9** series are all above 95w, which as you say wouldnt be compatible. How come on the link I posted it says that the 9** series will be compatible?

Thanks for your quick response by the way.

It mean that only 95W processors are compatible in the Phenom II 9/8/7 and 5 series. The board has a pretty lowend power phase setup and probably cant handle a 125W processor. You can run a quad as in the Phenom II 820, Phenom II 840, Phenom II 925 and Phenom II 945.

The Phenom II 840 just has no L3 cache. I have no idea why its called a Phenom II, should have been called a Athlon II. The Phenom II 820 has 4mb. of L3. But you can use the Phenom II 925 and 945 C3.

Ah right OK thanks for that, that makes more sense.

I'm now thinking of getting the 925 95w, problem is, I cant seem to find a site to buy it from anywhere! (same goes for the 945 c3) Any suggestions?

I am seeing people talking about it online (although it seems to be an uncommon processor, as by the looks of it people are only aware of the 125w version, not the 95w), but I can't actually find a decent and safe website to buy it from, bearing in mind I live in the UK.

Phenom 840 & 850 95w

Hey guys it's been a while since I posted, but I need a little more advice!

I have looked for the 925, and cannot find it in stock anywhere as it is discontinued. Instead, I decided to buy the 840 in it's place (sacrificing the L3 Cache I know) but now theres another problem, in the last couple of weeks I can't seem to find that one now either!

Have been doing a bit of research and I am now thinking of getting the new model - 850 95w.

Based on the info I gave in previous posts, would anyone be able to confirm that this new processor will work on my motherboard? Just worried that it wouldnt be due to the fact it's brand new, and my motherboard is older now.

Thanks

Also, would I be able to use the same fan/heatsink that is currently in my PC? Or would I have to install the new one? It's just ive heard rumors that the ones in the box arent that good for some reason.

the ones in the box are fine unless you begin to overclock more than .2-4ghz depending on the cpu as each acts differently than the next, but idk if that's compatible

Ah OK thats great, so as long as I don't begin overclocking it... (Which i probably wont do to be honest). Do you mean you are unsure if the processor is compatable with my motherboard?

actually it will, look in the info you linked to in the beginning and as long as the 850 is a deneb quad core than it should be supported, otherwise they falsley labled the compatibility and it is their fault.
