which socket is the way to go for intel?

i want to build a gaming computer with an intel chip

i use the internet and multitask so id like to stick with intel

i want to use an ASUS main board

i also would like to use 1gb of ram

2 512s that is

what can you recommend?

AMD no just kidding..[i would get one, but your mind is already set]

Anywasy, as far as "I" know the socket dosn;t much matter for OCing. but i would get a higher one, just because. As long as you have the money that is.

i have a 3.0 prescott 478 now

i am goign to something else to escape the heat cause my case is louad from all the fans i have to run to maintain an acceptable temp

if i go to an lga 775 will it run hott ?
i notice its a prescott too

also whats the .13 um process?

why is it so damn expensive?

OC ability really isnt that impotant i guess but itd be cool if it could handle some

i guess heat and noise are big to me

939 hands down.. pentiums get crappy clocks. I just got a new venice an managed to get 992 extra mhz. 1.8->2792 on air.

besides if you start youself off with a 3000 or 3200+ 939, you can upgrade in 1-2 years to a fx-55 or new fx-57 thats not out yet without replacing anything except for your CPU, since its still a 939.

dont forget also a64s are 64 bit with integraded Northbridge.

My opnion is very unbiased as well I have a P4 3.2ghz, celeron 2.6, and athlon 64 3000+ venice. athlon is for gaming, p4 is for work. it really depends what you want to do with it.

For light tasks like surfing the internet and emailing and such you will notice no difference between Intel and AMD.

that's not entirely accurate, I can take my 3GHz P4 and clock it to ~4GHz on the stock cooler

Just an integrated memory controller not the entire northbridge.

I have corsair value select memory
so ill run with that
I think i may take the leap and go to the AMD side for a change

ok im a little lost on all the amds

whats the castle one vienna and san diego?

whats the deal with each one

if you wanted to spend about 320 between the main board and the chip which combo could you sugggest?

Id prefer an ASUS board because ive had good luck with them

but i am open to suggestions

i thought pci and agp were video card things?

i have a 6800gt agp 4x/8x video card

and i beleive its 184pin ddr2 corsair value select 3200

its on an asus p4p 800se board now

Ok an nForce3 250 ultra based board would probably be the best, they can support S939 Athlon64s. Also your ram will be DDR1 not 2 :)

I would get a DFI lanparty board. they are best for over clocking. they you can adjust voltage within 100th of a volt. they have a reloades cmos meant for over clocking you get complete control over everything and they are easy to troubleshoot. I would go with a 3000+ winchester or venice core. or a 3200 winchester.

this is true but if you run 3dmark03 or 05 on athlon 64 oced machine to 3ghz vs a ghz p4 the athlon will get a better score if all other parts are the same except motherboard for proper socket...

here is architecture of A64:

I think they are both good CPUs just the athlon is more meant for over clocking. AMD is starting to accept and encourages (their marketing is proof of this) while Intel discourages it love to make cpus for boards that lock down bios settings

Yes but the A64 is more 3DMark friendly.

this is the K8(A64) architecture, the northbridge isn't just a memory controller (although thats what most of the northbridge is for) it also manages the PEG/AGP link
