so im not an expert with computers but i know a bit, im 17 and currently takin classes to become an IT. Well this inspired me to take out my old pc and mess around a bit. I found that the harddrive in my old system is double the size (60gb instead of the 30gb i got right now). It all messed up, it had a very crappy os...windows me...ughh and was also infected with a virus. If it does eventually make it to windows before you can even move the mouse or open up a prog. it freezes.

Now my questions,
How would i go about whipping the 60gb out and starting fresh
How could i fix this freezing problem if possible.

If your going to install a new OS, then just boot from the CD and it should give you to reformat it prior to installing.

You could do it one of two ways. First would be set the jumper to Slave and hook it up to your current system. From there, you can format it via My Computer. After that's done, run a full Check Disk on the old Drive just to make sure there are no bad sectors.

The second way is to download a third-party utility like Gparted or Fdisk. With Gparted (GUI), after you burn a .iso image to CD, you can boot to it and do everything from there. Fdisk (command-line with instructions - fail safe that works with pretty much everything) works the same way, only can be saved to a floppy disk if you want.

Edit: Or, yeah, if you want to install a fresh OS on it, just boot to the Setup CD:)

Common man, your 17 and going to school for an IT and you dont know how to wipe a hdd clean? Im 16 and I know how. Well, I just turned 17 today. LOL Happy b-day to me!

thats cool dude sorry im not to your standards...just trying to learn..dick

Srry man but, it doesnt really make sense to me. But yeah, as he mentioned that is how you do it. Come back here if you have anymore problems. You should also read the forum rules as you might be receiving an infraction for what you said. Just a FAIR warning!

i figured i would but things like that just get under my skin, i just started the classes only been going on 3 days, i didnt ask what you knew or how muck i just asked for help

So you dont have any prior knowledge about pc's? Not trying to be mean, just wondering. If no prior knowledge then I guess you should not post in the beginning of your threads that you in school for an IT but, should post that you are a noob and trying to lean. Then people will not be implying things and will help you as much as possible. I think we all have plenty of time to help you out and help you to understand anything that you need. Thats my 2 cents!!

i dunno to me i have experience but nothing compared to you guys, i just know the basics on how to tear apart and put back together computers, just not so much with trouble shooting
