White Screen on laptop.

Hi everyone,

I am working on a friends laptop which is displaying a white screen. I have read online that some people would go into safe mode and type in explorer via the CMD and download malwarebytes to run a scan because trojans were known for doing this. (this was found online)

I am able to connect with an external monitor, but as far as trying the above I am unable to get into safe mode. This laptop has a vista sticker and when I try a last know config I see XP professional.

My friend told me he has had 2 people look at and this laptop is very old, but they were unable to resolve. I am not that comfortable with taking apart the laptop to see if maybe a cable is loose.

I am asking for some help here to see how else I can go on troubleshooting this.

Thank you

Could be the inverter, could be the cable could be malware. Since you can't get into safe mode can you get into BIOS? If you can get into BIOS I would suspect malware. You can run Bitdefender rescue CD. http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/

Burn ISO with IMGburn.

You can also try Hitman Pro kickstart which uses a USB drive. But if the computer is old it may not have the boot from USB BIOS option. http://www.surfright.nl/en/downloads/

SARDU allows you to make a DVD full of scanners. But when you install SARDU make sure you use custom install. http://www.sarducd.it/

Morning,

Thank you for the reply.

I was thinking that maybe it could be the inverter. I watched a video yesterday replacing a screen and it was pretty simple to gain access to the video cable. ( I am thinking maybe it may have gotten loose some how)

I have been able to get into BIOS as I am connected with an external monitor.

I will give the Bitdefender rescue CD a try. I actually had thought about also using AVG rescue CD.

One crazy thing is that when I also have the AC adapter plugged in the white screen doesn't appear. It seems that the only way it appears is when I have it unplugged. (I find this strange)

I had to ask my friend if he has ever replaced his battery on this laptop and he said no. I am also beginning to think it is time to purchase a new battery should he decide to stay with this laptop.

I didn't give details on the make and model for the laptop, but it is a Toshiba Satellite A205.

Thank you for the reply.
