Why 2 graphics cards?

Hi all, i saw the other day a computer for sale with 2 graphics cards in it. This really amazed me. I was just wondering if any computer can have two graphics cards (if you have a spare slot). Also, I was wondering if it increases performance drastically.

Cheers Guys

You need a mobo with SLI ability. Only nVida cards can do do it. It only changes the performence about 50% I think.

Well all along one could install 2 video cards into computers. In the past this would have been done by installing a video card either into the agp slot and another into a pci slot or with computers equipped with just pci slots they would install a videocard in 2 pci slots. This allowed one to hook up multiple monitors to one computer offering no performance increase whatsoever.

What you saw was prob. however 2 video cards hooked up together using Nvidia's SLI technology into 2 Pci-Express slots which allows 2 video cards to run as one allowing each one to draw half the image on screen thus working only half as hard you can crank up the Resolution as well as the visual goodies without much loss in performance. So basically this is done for a decent performance increase but only after adjusting settings high enough that would normally stress one single card. As Apathetic as mentioned only Nvidia offers this at the moment.

Actually its only about approximately 35% I've heard.

wow...huge difference in what people have heard. I was informed you receive a maximum of 70% increase of speed/performance etc. using SLi.

but back to the topic, yes you'd need an SLi compatible motherboard and SLi compatible vodeo cards to run 2 gfx cards onto same monitor and receive boosted performance and what not.

Some non-SLi mobo's can be converted to SLi (DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D) with a small mod and SLi conection thingy (i really dont know what its called lmao)

see here, they even include a tool for installing the connection.
