Why 72dpi? URGENT!!

I have an assessment task for year 12 IT tomorrow which counts for 12.5% my final mark (yikes) and what I need to know urgently is why images for use on the internet should be 72dpi. It's such a random number! Is it something to do with the resolution of monitors aeons ago? Has it changed since then?
 
Thankyou so much! You have no idea how grateful I am. My teacher still thinks that 72 dpi is optimum (if that's what she wants, then that's what I'll give her) but I'll word it they way they do on the websites you supplied me with.

ie. Most monitors display roughly 72 dpi
