Why a limited amount.

Why is it that when you go into your dvd settings and click region. You can only change the reagion a certin amount of times.

Because if you could do it an unlimited number of times it would make the regions system completely useless.

"Motion picture studios want to control the home release of movies in different countries because theater releases aren't simultaneous (a movie may come out on video in the U.S. when it's just hitting screens in Europe). Also, studios sell distribution rights to different foreign distributors and would like to guarantee an exclusive market. Therefore they required that the DVD standard include codes to prevent playback of certain discs in certain geographical regions. Each player is given a code for the region in which it's sold. The player will refuse to play discs that are not coded for its region. This means that a disc bought in one country may not play on a player bought in another country. Some people believe that region codes are an illegal restraint of trade, but no legal cases have established this."

Is bypassing that setting illegal? I've never had a problem since I don't buy foregin DVD's...but I've heard it can be a real pain. I mean what if you had a relative from a different country who sent you a ton of DVD's for Christmas or something...? This whole regions restriction seems awfully...overkill i guess.

usually just reflashing the firmware of the drive gets around that. but its only there to protect region coding thats all

well I guess it does in a sort of roundabout way: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

there have been on going litigations with companies like 321 Studios..

for the time being slysoft is LEGAL, but I still contend that it is highly un-ethical. ..I do believe making a backup of your software for PERSONAL use only is okay.

Agreed but let's not forget not everyone here lives in the US

True, but for the most part, DVD's with a US regional code are the ones being skirted around...

I would hope you would want me to follow your rules when purchasing a product or service from YOUR country... should I not ask the same in return?

I understand that the regional code sucks when all you want to do is LEGALLY purchase a DVD and be able to watch if outside of the US.. but lets think about the big-horrible-mean movie industry for a second and allow them to make some money in movie theaters outside of the USA by making you wait a little longer before being able to buy the DVD's...

Even though they already make us wait (between cinema and store)? ;)

..well, you have a point.

I guess we should hope and pray that movies do bad in US theaters so our neighbors around the world will see the movies much faster...
