Why are Laptop Internal Speakers Mediocre at Best?

OK I can understand one reason for laptop internal speakers being mediocre at best- the manufacturers don't want to pay for the extra cost for better speakers but I know I'd gladly pay extra for good internal speakers. Anyone have any other ideas. I'm posting a related thread about HP Beat Audio internal speakers as I didn't want that topic to be lost. Thanks for your input.

its hard to fit a airbox inside of a laptop. thats what it comes down to, its not the speaker that improves the sound its the thing that holds it, which is why you can make a decent 'speaker' even out of a tissue box, as long as you port a hole in the side of it, using a crappy electronics shop speaker

Some laptops do have good internal speakers but they are few and far between. The toshiba Qosmos is a recent one that jumps to mind.
