Why do CoreTemp and Speedfan show such diff numbers?

At idle, CoreTemp shows this:
Core #0: 18 C
Core #1: 13 C

At idle, SpeedFan shows this:
Core: 12 C
Core: 42 C (whoa, big difference)

What's going on? Is there a different, reliable program I can try?

Well I've got a fan controller with temp sensors...the sensor for my cpu is just stuck in the heatsink and it reads 92. CoreTemp reads about 110. SpeedFan reads about 120...lol So I have no idea which is reliable. CoreTemp seems more likely. I know the heatsink won't show exactly what my cpu temp is but it can't be 30 degrees off. 20 is more likely.

dude there is no way your athlon x2 6000+ idles that low, the 42C is probably the most accurate. but the more reliable way to check your temps is to look in the BIOS

Say what you will, but I love SpeedFan once it's up and running. Granted, the initial 'guess the temp' is frustrating, but after it's all sorted out, I've personally found it to be more accurate with the majority of systems I've used it on. But as Cleric mentioned, BIOS is the best way to get an accurate reading as the CPU runs at full speed, but has zero load, for a 'true' Idle temp.
