After building my own PC, I don't really pay attention to what the big manufacturers are doing w/ new desktops. Whenever possible, I try to convince people to build it themselves.
However, I will say that the Sony Vaio I've owned since 2003 has been very reliable. No, you can't really upgrade the hardware. It will not play any of the modern games. It does run apps like Office, Nero and IE pretty well. For many, that's all they do w/ their PC.
Basically, I agree w/ many of the comments Imsati made. People are not stupid, and many of them do not care about the best hardware, gaming and awesome benchmarks - they only want to get their work done. For them, companies like HP, Sony and Dell do a pretty good job.
