I recently had a cable fail on me and I've been asking myself this question. I can't seem to find a proper answer on Google.
What causes SATA cables to fail over time?
I've been using the laptop without any issues for 2 years and suddenly the SSD stopped working, kernel error. I swapped it out for a 5400RPM HDD and it worked, so I thought it was the SSD. To my surprise, the new SSD didn't work and a few days later, the 5400RPM HDD started having trouble to boot, to the point where it just wouldn't book anymore. I changed the cable and it's all good now.
Here are a few of my assumptions, although I might be really off:
- Possibly faulty motherboard giving too much voltage to the hard drive, thus frying the cable somehow?
- Leaving the computer on sleep 90% of the time?
- Forgetting to enable TRIM for the SSD?
