Why do some cases come with remote controls?

remember

Just the title please? also what can they do that other, non-remote control
cases can not do? Whats the purpose? Just to turn computer on and off?

Most cases that comes with remote controls are media PC cases. Thus, the remote control, paired up with the right software, can control movies playbacks, music and some other stuff.

they're for people like me, who HATE having external devices, such as remote receievers, and want cases with everything built in.

do you have a link to such a case, tho, i'm actually interested

i was going to get a creative fatal1ty sound card to serve the purpose of a internal remote receiver, but i've heard NOTHING good about that card

Media PC case?

To diduknowthat:
Whats the difference between the Media PC case and the HTPC case? The cases I saw that came with remote control where called HTPC cases.

Also, where can I get a complete list of the "other things" that these cases can do with the remote? Can they also control recording? Im planning to have this Media/HTPC case replace my DVD player/recorder and connect directly to my TV and thus I can record whatever I want from TV directly on to my HDD. I imagine yes, but just to make sure how do I figure out which ones do if only certain specific cases can?

To heyman421:

What is a remote receiver?

Im trying to build a case with as much inside as I can. Regular computer for internet etc, dvd recorder/player, audio components for connection to speaker system, satellite receiver, as much as possible.

Not all of them have remote control, but a lot do. Most are called Media center cases, some say HTPC, but what is the difference?

The same?

Well thats a big relief. That has been on my mind for a while. From the Cases 101 sticky, its a bit confusing.

http://www.computerforum.com/55610-cases-101-a.html

"Media Center. Generally taller than cases with the Desktop profile and designed to be more sleek and to better blend into the home theater environment, these cases are very well suited for housing a home-threater computer."

"HTPC/Shuttle Now these cases are designed for the minimalist at heart. With barely enough room for everything, you can hide this case almost anywhere. Do pay attention to the cooling requirements if you choose to pursue this option however"

From the pictures, the Media Center looks a lot more like an awesome HT A/V piece of equipment. I dont know what the HTPC/Shuttle looks like.

Thanks for clearing that up.

But can they all record/play/stop with the remote? Im planning to use my projector & screen for both TV and internet stuff. IS there any specific requirement I should be looking for in these remote control Media center/HTPC cases for switching between watching/playing/recording TV and using the internet with the touch of a button on the remote?

If this is possible, this is going to be the best HTPC or rather media center computer system ever.

...or the touch of a wireless awesome keyboard and not have to blow such a wad of cash on those cases, which look retarded

you could program the keys to do the things you want and have much more customability

"Retarded"? That's your opinion...

Ease of use, I'd have to say a keyboard would definitely be better.

How much can the keyboard do vs. a remote?

To joeswm8:

The wireless keyboard, I already had in mind for a long time (just for surfing, typing etc.), but I never knew, I could use the keyboard to do everything the remote control could do.

Are you sure the keyboard can do everything the remote control can do? What about actually turning on the computer?
Does the computer have to be on all the time to just watch TV(which will be connected to my sat receiver)? what about when I want to quickly start recording something? what about programming to record a TV show at 8.30pm or whenever? Im planning to install that Twinhan? tuner card too, so I can watch certain HD channels in HD res, which my sat receiver can not do(its only SD)- so please keep that in mind.

Your right, the media cases are a ^%cking ripoff, but I never knew that with just any standard? wireless keyboard, I could change channels?, start recording?, playback? etc. Actually, if I have to change channels with the keyboard, I think I would rather use the remote. But please let me know exactly what the keyboard is capable of versus the remote.

Again, I have a satellite receiver, and I was told that I need a twinhan tuner card, so I could watch certain HD channels.

So, will I still use the remote control from my stb (set top box/sat receiver) to change channels?, even with the twinhan card installed for watching HD channels? or will I have to change channels via the keyboard? Changing channels via a keyboard seems a bit cumbersome to me.

Lastly, will the wireless keyboard be able to change my projector from "watching TV" mode to recording/playback TV mode to using internet, MSword etc.? How will I switch from TV mode to computer mode? Just press a button on the keyboard?

And finally, What do you mean by "they really go compared to some maxed out full and mid towers" How can the case have anything to do with the speed? the go?

TV mode is computer mode i think with a window watching TV.

i have not personally dealt with this stuff, but you can program certain keyboards to do most functions, including turning on the computer, and i am aure you can assign keys to forward, reverse, etc.

there are certain programs that you can set the channel, time, show and have it record it, but your computer has to be on all the time.

Exactly what am I looking for?

To joeswm:
1)Ok, so now that thats all cleared up, exactly what kind of a case do I need now? Anyone?

(Im under the impression that the mediacenter cases are not necessary anymore)

Therefore can I choose any? type of case I want?

2) What does this mean? "TV mode is computer mode i think with a window watching TV"

If I have to have the computer on all the time, is that safe? is there some sort of heatsink, cooling specification? that I should definitely have installed?

To liquidshadow:
Im probably going to Staples today just to get my first lesson on these wireless keyboards. What type of "specifics" should I be looking out for?
