why do video cards face downwards?

thats all. its frustrating me. why do they? is it just so that video card and processor fans dont hit eachother?

some people have inverted cases which lets you see all of the card's faceplate, but other then that, i dont know, its ghey

I think it's due to the fact that there's usually more space underneath (with spare expansion slots) than there is on top when the rig has a massive cpu cooling thing going on. I think it's just to allow for more customising.

erm.. i dont think so tbh.. I think the reason is much more practical.. :P
Dust.. when the Heatsink would fase upwards, it would catch a lot more dust,.. not to mention that it is much easyer for BIG pluche pieces to be sucked into the fan and block the air to flow through the heatsink completely. sjeesh... you guy's really need to learn something about cleaning stuff.. :P

Edit: also... if a cable (a 4pin molex for example) hang's loose... when do you think its more likely it gets stuck in the Fan of the grafic's card's cooler... when its facing upwards or downwards? :)

True...but its just so much better looking with the heatsink n fan facing upward...personally i dont really care which way it faces, but it does look better on that side. at least my card which has about zero eye candy does lol. i like the navy blue tho

It has nothing to do with dust. Ever think about the air the gpu will be pulling in if it was "the right side up"? It would be pulling hot air from the CPU, so it being upside down allows it to pull in cooler air from the bottom of the case.

Has anyone seen some of the latest HP desktops?? i've seen two at work so far and they have the MB mounted on the otherside of the case...which means all those "upsidedown" graphics cards, face upwards on them.

true i would get pissed if i got issues. im just saying reguardless of the reasoning for why, i wouldnt really care about whether or not it was up or down because i dont tend to look at it (even tho i have a clear sided case). i just dont really care about looking at my gpu going oohhh pretty...i go more like ohh pretty cheap (cost) and works pretty well, not bad. lol. ya it would be cool to have them the other way if there werent consequences and u wanted to go to ur buddies and go hey check this out. idk i dont really care about the bling factor of the gpu, if it works well then it works

ya i didnt think about the cases that opened on the right...hmm i guess they would be facing up...but there has to be issues with it whether it be dust or heat or whatnot.hmm something to take a look at
