Why does everything I connect to my laptop stop working after I disconnect it?

For example, an MP3 Player I connected doesn't turn on now (and I've tried charging it and I haven't dropped it) and when I plugged in the printer the screen on the computer turned off and now the printer doesn't work properly. Is it a virus? This laptop is eating everything I try to plug into it!? Help! It's running XP Pro.

Couldn't possibly be a virus... that's just now how they work.

That is odd. I suppose that it's possible that something my be shorting and sending out too much voltage on your USB ports, but I've never heard of that happening. I think the most likely case is that those things just happened to stop working around the time that you plugged them in. It's pretty common for the battery to die on an MP3 player. What's wrong with your printer?

It is a strange ssue indeed, can;t think of anything off the top of my head other than this:

It isn't plugeed in!

sorry had to :)

But no, I can think of nothing. Will the peripherals work on another system?

Lol. The MP3 player won't turn on and I've connected it to my PC for a day and still it won't fire up so it's obviously not a battery issue and it apparently hasn't been dropped. Maybe it's the manufacturer's fault and the printer does work after it screwed the laptop in question.

Is this a new laptop? I have seen incorrectly wired USB ports on computers that cause problems. Have the USB ports on this computer ever worked properly?

I didn't mean dead as in drained, dead as in the battery isn't going to work again, and needs to be replaced. It happens.

Ok. Gotcha. That's a pretty poor effort on Philipp's behalf then (they make the MP3 player in question) and the person who bought it only got it in the last few months. I got the printer to work yesterday. It is a Xerox Workcentre PE220 and worked like it should have : I plugged 'n' it played (after a long search for drivers on Windows Update mind you). Apparently the first time the printer was connected to the laptop, the laptop died (i.e. it shut down for no apparent reason - Compaq makes the laptop and it's apparently a year old). The MP3 still doesn't work btw. Thanks for the help.

Oh, just thought I might ask one more question, can a device which is connected to a computer via a physically damaged USB cable cause such random an event as what I described in my original question? Thanks.

Theoretically, I suppose that it is possible, but I've never heard of it. I really can't imagine there being a power surge great enough through the USB port that would be great enough damage a device connected and not fry the laptop too.

As for the MP3 player, I work on all kinds of small electronics like MP3 players and cellphones, and I might be able to fix it for you if you're interested. What's the model?

Haha. Sorry man, but the reason why I use free forums is primarily because I don't want to have to spend money. I'm young and poor and we're in a recession. Thanks for the help though.
