Why does MS force you to put all your files on the cloud?

I love OneNote but I cannot use the new free version unless I’m connected to the cloud. I personally don’t want my stuff going to Microsoft and I don’t always have an internet connection.
I just found this blog on disabling it, but I have to create an account and log in before I can shut it down.

This is very suspicious that they would offer you something free and make you store your stuff there. It seems like they want to see what you’re doing and who’s to say what else their doing with that information. I don’t have anything worth stealing like business espionage kinds of stuff, but I want to be in control of my small personal notes on my own computer. Screw the cloud!

One of the major abilities of OneNote is the ability to access your info in OneNote from multiple devices. There's no conspiracy or anything suspicious going on.

Oh I didn't notice the date. Maybe that's why I can't get it to work. Thanks for pointing that out.

Well I understand why people want the cloud and I'll tell you, if I was in a business, I sure as hell would not want all my records on another businesses computer.

Anyway I have all my computers on my home network and I use briefcase to sync everything to my lap top. I don't use my smart phone to do anything except to look up a price or an address or something so I don't need the cloud. Even if I did I don't have internet service for most of the day anyway.

I want to be able to choose where my files are and I don't want to be forced into it. If the internet starts charging by the amount of data one uses then everyone is going to be in trouble.

You'd be surprised. A lot of cloud hosted deployments are favored based on reduced TCO. Most orgs just see dollar signs.

Well that maybe but I sometimes think TCOs are over inflated. I once had large Wholesale Corporation say they could no longer take Credit Cards for under $100 purchases because according to their accountant each purchase cost over $60. I just laughed and told them to get another accountant because he was probably pocketing the money. That lasted a month before going back to normal.
Another time I was working at a military base and wanted to make a photo copy. They said each paper copy would cost $20 so I went to Kinkos and paid 10 cents a copy.
