Why does my DSL keep bottoming out?

I have a wireless DSL service, and I'm supposed to be getting 6mbps. I only get about 4 on a good day, but the internet will drop out/get really slow every once in a while. Does anyone have any idea why this is occurring? And what can I do to stop it?

I'm not using a router and I have near-perfect line-of-sight.
 
About 4 miles. I'd understand about 5mbps out of 6 because of the distance, but i get 2-3. That's not right.

 
Wireless data throughput is determined by a number of factors, not limited to signal strength (affected by distance between transceivers, obstacles between antennae, etc), noise interference (cordless handsets, other wifi devices), and number of other devices connected (total throughput cannot exceed the limit on the tower).

Chances are, your throughput drops when there are a lot more users on-line, typically in the afternoon/evening when people get home from work/school and go online for entertainment, checking email, etc.

Also, ISPs advertise max throughput, not the average you will experience.
