why does my laptop only install the wrong graphics card driver?

ok so i have an Nvidia gt 650m in my laptop. and for a while it worked fine.

but recently i turned on my laptop to find that its normal driver is gone and there is a driver for the Nvidia GT 640m LE graphics card. basically my laptop thinks my graphics card is one other than the one installed.

this mix up is causing the graphics card to under perform horridly, overheat, and just be a general danger to other parts of the computer. furthermore i have tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the correct one. but my laptop is insisting that i have the Nvidia GT 640m LE graphics card. and as such is report that i cannot install the correct drivers.

and i opened it up to confirm on the chip it indeed says Nvidia GT 650m. so i didnt just buy the wrong card.

what the heck could possibly be going on here?

Well first of all, what model laptop are we talking about here?
Second, did you try a system restore back to before you had this issue?

the model is Lenovo Ideapad y480.

and when i switched the motherboards i did a fresh windows install.

so i dont really have a restore point from "before" the issue. since the issue has been happening since the beggining of the fresh install.
