Why Does My old PC no longer work?

one day my PC just froze and when I turned it off and on again, the screen was all blank.

It's an IBM aptiva PC (shit).

what would be broken about it? there was no burning smell or whatever.

when I turn it on, it makes the usual sounds but no output on the screen.

the screen isnt broken as I tested it on a different PC.

The PSU seems to be working fine, the CPU fan spins and everything seems normal.

does anyone know what could be broken?

thanks.

IT DID HAVE AN ONBOard video card but then I used a Pci (cant remember if thats the right term) one but neither worked.

it was some radeon thing.

does anyone know what might be wrong?

now I see nothing when the monitor is going through the motherboard or the video card.

thanks guys.

hmm are we ceratin the monitor is working and correctly connnected, i know it may sound daft but this is still the most likley problem.

if all the fans turn on the computer should at least be posting,
do you notice if there are any unsually beeps when you turn the machine on?

at the moment im leaning towards a dead/dying motherboard, these symptons are all too common. Have you tried to clear the CMOS, its a long shot but its still worth a try, then go through the usual procedures, strip the PC down to basics, take out any optical drives, if it has more than one stick of RAM then take all but one out.

I know its an old PC so some of the rules to go by might not count, but still do it.

ive had the same problem a few times, its the motherboard, almost for sure, the cpu would be the next guess, but mobos are cheaper to replace to test....

Before you replace anything, unplug the computer from power and take out the RTC battery for a few minutes and put it back in. The video settings could've gone wrong in the BIOS. This happened to 2 of my older machines with PCI cards.
