Why does my PC keep crashing?

Ok I managed to install windows XP after alot of hassle. It was fine until I downloaded the usual things, like a decent browser, windows media player, etc. But in the past it has done this before, mainly when loading programs, nomally media. I properly installed the mother board, sound card etc.

And each time i get to the desktop and it crashes. Any ideas?

I get the blue screen of death too. with errors to do with win32k.sys and nfts.(something) and stop: 0x0000008E (example)

It's really annoying me now. I've had this computer 3 years or so nearly, custom built, and in the past i have managed to overcome getting system restarts and it crashing.

If anyone can help it would be great *thumbs up*

Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks.

If next time, you can get exact error message instead of a something or example..

It'll help a little bit more.

Other than that, since it's a couple years old, what are the specs of your pc?

AMD 1.6ghz, 80gb Excelsior (I think) HD, 512 DDR, Asrock K7S8X (Specs of this is here > http://www.asrock.com/product/K7S8X.htm).

It's custom built, but I have never had these problems before. I have tried installing windows again, and now it says unable to format, make sure drive is switched on.

It says the CD that came with it has CD which is does, and I haven't gotten the built in audio input/output to work so I use a soundcard which is http://www.sweex.com/producten.php?sectie&item=57&artikel=609 this one.

I don't think me changing the pri/slave masters through setup would be a problem.

I know the bits I have are cheap and cheerful, but it has done the job for me. I'm sure this is a way around this. I am formatting the drive once again waiting for the stop screen details.

Fire away with any questions.

The blue screen this time said:

A Problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

If this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart ouyr computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or chek with the manufacturer for driver upsdates. Try changing video apadters (meaning?)

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 and select advance start up options and then select safe mode.

Techinical Information:

*** Stop: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x807CBBA3, 0XF8987FB8, 0xF8987CB8)

any use?

Normally there is a file involved like NTFS.sys or WIN32k.sys and sometimes others.
