...worse than my celeron???

Intel celeron D (SL7NW)
single core
2.8ghz
256kb cashe
533mhz
90nm
(10-35fps averaging 20fps on CODMW2)

Intel pentium 4 ht (SL7B8)
single core hyper threaded
3.2ghz
1mb cashe
800fsb
90nm
(8-25fps averaging 15fps on CODMW2)

P.S.!!!!! the p4 ht makes a weird high pitched sound under any sort of load

lol, help me out please

I'm pretty sure your high-pitched noise is coming from the fan-speed adjustment on your CPU HS/F (heatsink/fan). In BIOS if you have some intel-based technology like SpeedStep (well, on the newer gen cores anyway), the frequencies and fan speeds are automatically adjusted based on load. You can alter these in BIOS.

Your CPU doesn't make a massive difference in gaming. If its performance you want to see, get yourself a new GPU (if the 6600 is what you are using, based on your sig). Sure, CPU matters, however, if you want any more improvement on MW2, get yourself a new graphic.

I'll let others speak their opinions on this matter too, there's no saying that there's no alternatives...

even with the uprgrade you only just reach the minimum system req for MW2 i would imagine getting a new gpu would help but you may also have a bottleneck due to outdated pentium 4
but as im sure your aware for the best results your gonna also need a better cpu (like dual core quad core etc)
but like me you have a 478 board so your basically gonna need a new mobo for this and probably a pretty much a new build

i do understand my system is not an optimal gaming setup, but thats not what i am asking. i realize a pent 4 sucks compared to modern i7's and 6core amd's... Im NOT saying i am expecting GOOD performance outputs. I am simply expecting an IMPROVEMENT from celeron from the same generation. i gain an extra thread, 400mhz speed, and 4 times as much cashe... i expected a little improvement, instead i got worse results, and an annoying noise. do you understand were I'm coming from?

when i put the celeron in it made no high pitched noise. it is very high pitched, I asked my dad if he could hear it, and he couldent.

I don't understand why you are saying you got worse performance with the P4 when your statistics you posted show a gain of 5 FPS average with the P4 over the celeron.

You need a TRUE dual core at atleast 3ghz to play any modern games, hyper threaded P4's just don't cut it.

Your graphics card is probably more of a bottleneck than the P4 though, which is why you saw an increase going to the P4 over the celeron but not much. I still doubt you'd see much gain going to a stronger GPU while retaining the P4 though, probably another 5 FPS because the P4 is still a massive bottleneck.

As for the whining noise under load, thats common I wouldn't worry about it. Old technology.

Your CPU doesn't make a massive difference in gaming.

It does if your CPU is a massive bottleneck!! LOL. Just for fun I tested a socket 775 setup P4 VS an E6750. The P4 661 which is a cedar mill 65nm with hyper threading and 2mb cache, I overclocked it to 4.5ghz (yes 4.5) with 4mb of ddr2-800 cas 4 ram, and an 8800gts 512mb video card. Playing COD WAW I got about 35 FPS and even dipping down into the 20's in intense scenes. Stuck in the E6750, clocked to 3.0ghz I was getting 80+ FPS at all times.

Heh heh! I can just imagine a smoking, struggling Pentium 4 as you pushed that to its limit. Quite an amazing difference of the Pentium 4 661 versus the Core 2 Duo E6750.

Oops, I meant 631...brain fart. I actually managed to get it to 4.8ghz on air-

P4at48ghz.jpg

the hissing noise is more then likely the caps on the board not the fan

2 of my old boards had that problem anytime my computer was under load and had more power running to the cpu

I am not sure how you are mad that you got an improvment? Obviously it isnt as much as you had hoped to get.
Anyways try to turn HT off, sometimes that can acutally hurt performance, but in this case i doubt it. Either way you will sit around non-playable frame rates with that GPU.

As another poster said, the bottleneck is probably mainly on your video card at this point, which is why the 5FPS improvement wasn't greater.

Thats pretty much of a understatement. A XP Athlon 3200+ could pretty much hold its own against a P4 at 3.2ghz. A Athlon 64 3200 beat it pretty bad clock for clock.

i just realized that i switched the fps's i am actually seeing worse performance in the pent 4

i'll edit my orig post*

Ahh. Well if you didn't have the squealing with the celeron, perhaps there's something wrong with this P4. It may be somewhat defective.

You should really upgrade to a socket 775 dual core setup, it will be amazingly different.

im just doing this all as experimentation. once i can afford it i will probably upgrade to an AM3/Phenom II x4/DDR3/GTS250

i have an i7 laptop that plays CODMW2 high settings 60fps so its not like i need a gaming setup.. its just to learn

I have the PERFECT upgrade for you, if you can swing $120 right now get these two components-

Board-

CPU-

You can re-use your current DDR ram and even your AGP video card!! When you can upgrade your video card, it also has a PCI-e x16 slot ready to go! Well, it's actually only a x4 slot, but that won't get bottlenecked until you would get something stronger than a 9800gtx.

Edit- Just saw your new post, well you don't have to upgrade to those components then if you got the laptop, but that $120 upgrade would really boost your FPS and future upgradeability. I bet you'd be getting 50-60 FPS, the 6600 being the bottleneck then.

i will try turning off HT to see what that does

ya, im goin to save the $120 for an AM3/Phenom II x4/DDR3/GTS250 setup.

but thanks though
