Why is my broadband speed rated so high?

I have cable internet with Comcast. It's supposed to be 6mbps that can go as high as about 12mbps during downloading.

But when I use speakeasy.net or speedtest.net, it rates my download speed anywhere from 17-20mbps. Why is this happening? Is there any accuracy to this? I've tried another site (dslreports.com) that seems to be much closer to my expected speeds (5-6mbps), but which should I trust?

Thanks.

Edit: Eh, just did a quick test with dslreports.com and it also is showing 17mbps.

Post you speedtest.net result also i think you may be misinterpreting MB/s and Mb/s.

comcast says that you will get 6mbps because thats the minimum. they can assure people that they will get that speed all the time. we often get higher speeds though when traffic is down. i also get speeds higher than rated, i once got 24mbps.

Speedboost. Your download speed is 6Mbps, however they give you a temporary speed of ~20Mbps for quick downloads and so forth. At least that's what I gathered.

I never noticed that on quick downloads...I always viewed it as a "omg I have 26mb connection I have huge e-peen"

Hmm, so even these speed tests count as "downloading" and give me the boost? Geez, then when do I ever actually have a 6mbps connection? Am I not always receiving at least *some* data when online?
