Why is my computer running so hard?

New Member
Lately my computer's CPU has been running really hard (i have one of those gadgets on my windows sidebar). Usually it runs around 1-20% when I'm surfing the internet, but nowadays its running at 50%+ when I have no programs open and I'm just sitting on the desktop. I don't know what is going on. Maybe some of you do? :)

Specs:
Dell XPS M1210
Intel Core 2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz
Windows Vista Home Premium

open task manager.
see which program is being maxed out. being a c2d processor it'll be the one with 50% or 100%. find out why (faulty program/driver/virus/etc). you can kill it or restart it
 
This is taking up 40%+ of my CPU according to task manager:

svchost.exe

The description says it's a "Host Process for Windows Services."

Any ideas?
 
kill it and see how your computer responds.

if your computer needs it then next time just restart that process. the easiest and no sweat way is to download procexp.exe, run it, locate that program, right click, restart.

sometimes malware will disguise themselves as an essential program. sysinternals have programs where you can view the file's signatures

did you try killing it or restarting the process as i suggested? what are the results?

as a former hijackthis user all you have to do is google each entry to read up on it. and if you do this a lot you can remember which ones are malwares. a lot of work. not very fun.

i find the best application for this is sysinternal's process viewer/or process explorer... i forget the name. i'll tell yo once i find it. just pay attention to the signatures. virus and adwares won't expose themselves and thus will leave it blank whereas microsoft as well as other reputable companies will sign theirs.

I tried to download Process Explorer from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx, but it isn't downloading properly. I'll try my luck in the morning. When I do eventually get it installed and running I won't know what to do or what to delete. Any pointers?
 
The description for the file is "Host Process for Windows Services" and that sounds like something that is necessary to windows. My computer hasn't been running as hard lately so it may have just been a fluke.
