Why is my computer sooo slow??

I mean all i do is listen to music and surf the web. For example, when I start to download stuff it would take 15 seconds for firefox's download window to open and start downloading. Also every programs I open take almost 30 seconds to open (firefox, itunes, etc.) I can't stand it! I think my computer is fast hardware-wise. The question is: is it my hardware or software that's causing the slowdown?

system spec: 320 seagate HDD, ASUS P5L-VM 1394, 3 GB ram, celeron (conroe-l) 1.6 GHz, MSI NX7600GT gfx card.

A note: I don't think it's the processor, no matter how low-end it seems. It should be up to par doing normal tasks that I do like higher-end CPUs; it's not a celeron D, it's conroe-l.

Anybody have any idea why my computer is so slow? I do virus scan and stuff but there's nothing malicious to be found. The computers in school takes 1/2 the time to open stuff and it's way lower end than my PC. Thanks for taking your time and replying!

Have you defragged your HDD, and deleted anything that you don't need...
You're computer will run slower if your HDD is full, or getting full. :)

yeah do as kornowski said, you can do a normal cleanup with Disk cleanup or you can use CrapCleaner, much better in cleaning and registry cleaning too

How can a Conroe be a Celeron ? dude am pretty sure you're running a Celeron. Face it, you can even add another 1gb stick in that pc of yours and won't do you any good.
My Cpu is a CoreDuo E2180 but it's Codename is "Conroe"... basically yours is Codenamed Conroe like mine but IT'S a CELERON..
run CPU'Z and see post the info here too

Yes, it's a Celeron. I just didn't want people to mistake it as the lesser Celeron D. I don't know if cleaning it up will help. I just removed some programs but it seems the same to me. Before I reinstalled Windows and wiped the HDD a few times (3x). But like 2 days later same thing.

To be honest, I think it's your CPU, if you don't want to buy a new one... Maybe you could try OC'ing it?

Nah, I've been running xp on computers with 800mhz upwards for years, processors are not important for every day use. To run music and internet software smoothly you just need a nice clean computer, processing speed isn't going to make a difference, not in this scenario

Ok, Thanks for clearing that up!

Maybe re-install windows then, if you've cleaned everything up. Defrag, Scan Disk, Virus / adware scan...
