Why is this cpu so expensive

The first one you posted is essentially the fastest; although it has a slightly lower clock speed than the i7-3970x, its two extra cores make it faster. In a workload that isn't threaded for 16 threads, however, the i7 may be faster. Of course, you could always overclock the Xeon. :)
 
A WS board by asus, ram...a good power supply, but yea, the chip is 8 core 16 threads. that is why its so expensive...

That's the set up I looked at, didn't thoroughly research to make sure everything there would work, particularly not sure if you can put 2 graphics cards of that type on, but at first glance it looked okay, not sure if you can get a better psu, and if it would be enough either
 
A QUADRO isn't a gaming card haha, it's used for like 3D modelling workstations.

Looking at it though, neither is the cpu, my intention was to build the most expensive one I could, this is nothing I would actually build given the chance. That said, could you still use it for gaming? my research while doing it was very minimal, also when I first started out, I was slightly intoxicated, which didn't help, my first thoughts for one of the best graphics cards would immediately be one of the GTX 690's

quadro will suck for gaming.
As far as I understand it, Quadros are made to render frames with 100% precision. Gaming cards are made to pump out frames as fast as possible, but not always at the best quality.
So, yes you can use a Quadro for gaming but it won't be anything near as fast as a decent gaming card.

Some good info there, thanks. While my plop graphics card jerks a little while playing Skyrim, would the same be true using this graphics card to do the job of a gaming one. Also, to get it straight, there would be no advantage at all to using that graphics card vs the gaming one?

Something like that...otherwise everything else is fine... i know you are in the UK, but just doing quick searches... thats what you are looking for to do it correctly, as for one the memory controller handles 1600 mhz, and its ecc rated...the other board does not handle ecc..

ECC if I am right is Error Control Coding. There is an extra chip on the memory that is there only for holding information to check the data of the other memory chips (parity?) ECC Modules offer better error handling and can catch mistakes. Modules that have ECC are usually a bit slower clocked than their gaming modules. The tadeoff is speed for data integrity. High stress environments that need absolute perfection with their data is really where these are used.

If you are looking for a board that has ECC look at server boards. There might be a few gaming boards that can use it but there if really no benefit for a gaming system.

Drivers are another reason that they have higher performance. They are specifically made to work with design applications.

Thanks, never really looked into server systems before, and looking at them, they look pretty colossal,

Just looked at the link on there, and my first thoughts I cannot post, as they contained bad language, but after we have got past the words I shall not repeat, did that really just say maximum memory supported 256gb? I have never seen anything more than 64
