Why my pc will suddenly shut down?

Hi,

It would be quite a long story and sorry for that. I would really appreciate if you guys can help me out.

Recently i just bought a desktop unit:

Here is the specs:
Details:

Intel Core i5 2500 Processor 3.3 GHz
2 X 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM BRAND NEW RAM ULTRA FAST
2TB SATA Hard Drive
Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 Gaming video card
Huntkey Cool Dual fan 700W power supply
Dell 23'' UltraSharp Monitor

I am wondering why the desktop will shut down and restart suddenly when i am playing games like Needforspeed Hot pursuit, Starcraft II.

When I check the system log, it shows it is about kernal power 41 critical problem:

When BugcheckCode 0
BugcheckParameter1 0x0
BugcheckParameter2 0x0
BugcheckParameter3 0x0
BugcheckParameter4 0x0
SleepInProgress false
PowerButtonTimestamp 0

I tested it by changing the resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 800x600 and it works fine without shutting down. And when i increased it higher and higher, the chance to shut down would occur occasionally in 1600x900 and oftenly in 1920 x 1080.

I am wondering whether my power supply isn't working well or it is not enough watt for my desktop.

Your advise is highly appreciated. Thanks

Ryan

If it seems to occur when playing games, and more frequently when the screen resolution is higher then it could be a PSU or a graphics card. Have you monitored the temps of these as you are playing to see if anything is overheating? You can use CPU-Z's hardware monitor to check the temps to ensure that nothing is overheating. Also, does the computer shut down and then restart itself automatically? Or are there any weird lines or unusual patterns that show up on the screen when it shuts down?

Really thank you for your reply!
I just bought it and it always happen when i started to play the game just for a while, i think the temps wont exceed as i just open the game. It shut down itself automatically whenever i played for a while in high resolution. I think it might have the problem with the PSU, probably because it is 700watt and the brand was a china company. There is nothing weird patterns happen and i think it is not the problem of software.

will 700 watt will be enough for radeon 6970, i5-2500 and 2tb harddisk?

If it is the problem of PSU, i think probably i can upgrade it to 1200watt to avoid any futher problem occured because of gaming.

Thanks for the reply.

I would definately get a different power supply like a corsair. You basically only need a 550 watt psu with 38 amps on the 12 volt rail. There is no need to get a 1200 watt psu.

Thanks for the reply again.

Since my PSU is 700watt, if I tried another better branded PSU, and the problem is still happen, then which part would have more possibilities that will cause this happen?

I am using same power point for both 700watt desktop and my monitor, would the power point be the main cause of this problem?

By power point do you mean wall socket? If so, then as long as you aren't overloading the circuit then your fine.

Since the machine is actually restarting lets do this so we can get a blue screen code to appear. Turn your system on and start pressing the F8 button to access safe mode options. When the options appear arrow down to where it says disable automatic restart on error. Next time the machine wants to restart it will show a blue screen with an error code, post back with that error code.

Hi,
Thanks for the advise.

I couldn't access to safe mode option for several times when i pressed F8 in the beginning of the restart

However, I unchecked the ''automatically restart'' option when system failure at the startup and recovery.

I tried to get the blue screen but it didnt come out before shut down.

And when the system restart, the "automatically restart" option become checked again.

Would that be a problem of power supply unit?

Please help me out and i would really appreciate for the help!

If you just bought this, take it back its faulty. Start playing around with it and you might find you void any warranty.

If you made it yourself, then yes, you definitely need a new PSU.

Thanks for the advise.

I have done some research on psu. Can you guys advise which is better?

Antec High Current 620W
Antec EarthWatts EA650
Antec TruePower TP-650W
Cooler Master Extreme power 650watt

or any other brand you guys think it's ok. Cosair would be quite expensive compared to other brand.

Thank you for the help.
